What is a brow lift?
Brow lift surgery addresses the brows and forehead, smoothing out forehead lines and raising the brows to give the patient a more alert, awake appearance. There are two different techniques for brow lift surgery. A temporal brow lift targets sagging on the outer half of the brow, while a central brow lift focuses on the inner brows.
Surgical methods
There are two methods of surgery. Endoscopic brow lift is the preferred surgical method as it creates less scarring and comes with an easier recovery. It consists of making 3-5 short incisions within the hairline. An endoscope, which is a tiny instrument with a camera at the end, is inserted through one of the incisions to provide a good visualization of the areas that will be worked on during surgery. Surgical tools are inserted through the other incisions to manipulate the skin and muscles as needed. Scars are hidden within the hairline.
A coronal brow lift consists of making one long incision that runs from one ear, around the forehead and ends at the other ear. The incision is hidden within the hairline. The forehead skin is lifted away so underlying muscles can be trimmed and repositioned. Eyebrows are lifted at this time, if necessary. Excess skin is trimmed while the forehead skin is re-draped. The incision is closed, and the scar will be hidden within the hairline.
Candidates for surgery
Most brow lift patients are between the ages of 45 and 60 years old. This is the time when aging really begins to show and everyone experiences some degree of sagging across the brows and forehead.
