Facelift & Neck Lift Surgery in Chicago and Chicago North Shore

Facelift (Rhytidectomy) smoothes loose skin on your face and neck and decreases visible signs of aging such as deep cheek folds and jowls. Different variations of a facelift may reposition deeper tissues and underlying fat to restore a more youthful contour to your face. Incisions are placed within the hairline and in the natural contours in front of, and behind, the ears. Modified (limited incisions) can also be done to correct only the lower face and neck at our practice in Chicago, IL.

After facelift surgery, some degree of bruising and swelling will occur, as well as temporary numbness in the face and neck.

Make-up can be worn 5 to 7 days after the procedure, and patients are often back to work within two weeks.

As we age, gravity takes its most obvious toll on our faces. Over time, we all experience a loss of skin elasticity and muscle tone of the face and neck. If you have developed facial and neck wrinkles, deep creases between the base of your nose and the corner of your mouth (frequently referred to as parentheses) or the appearance of jowls, a facelift can help to turn back the clock.

Dr. Wiener of Chicago IL prides himself on exceptional facelift results! He carefully and skillfully creates a more rested and youthful contour to the face and neck. Each facelift is different, based on your particular needs and goals.

Types of Facelift Surgery

A facelift can range from a mini facelift, sometimes called a limited facelift, to a more comprehensive face and neck lift, depending on where skin laxity appears and how much correction you want.

Mini Facelift

A mini facelift improves the lower cheeks, jawline, and jowls through a shorter incision placed in front of and partly within the ear. This option is often a good fit when neck skin laxity is not a major concern.

During the procedure, the cheek and jowl skin are smoothed, and the deeper tissues, including facial fat, are elevated for a more refreshed appearance. Recovery is usually about 1 to 2 weeks.

Mid-Face Lift

mid-face lift focuses on the central part of the face, especially the cheeks and the area beneath the eyes. This approach is designed to lift descended cheek tissue, restore youthful contour to the midface, and soften the transition between the lower eyelid and the cheek.

It can be a strong option for patients who are more concerned with cheek flattening or sagging in the middle of the face than with neck laxity. Recovery varies based on the technique used, but many patients can expect swelling and bruising to improve significantly within 1 to 2 weeks.

Neck Lift

A limited incision can also be made just in front of the earlobes and extend behind the ears to target the neck only. This approach is used to improve loose skin and banding in the neck when the cheeks and jowls do not need as much correction.

Recovery is usually about 1 to 2 weeks.

SMAS Facelift (Face and Neck Lift)

More extensive correction of the face and neck can be achieved with a face and neck lift, also called a SMAS lift. In this procedure, the deeper fibrous tissue that supports the facial fat is lifted, and the neck muscles are tightened. The skin is then repositioned, and excess skin is removed to create a rested, smoother, and more youthful appearance.

Recovery from a SMAS facelift is typically about two weeks. Procedures such as eyelid lift surgerybrow lift surgery, and laser skin resurfacing are often combined with facelift or neck lift surgery for more complete facial rejuvenation.

Deep Tissue (Deep Plane) Facelift

A deep tissue facelift, often called a deep plane facelift, lifts deeper facial structures below the SMAS layer to reposition the cheeks, soften deeper folds, and improve the jawline with a natural-looking result.
Because this approach releases and repositions the deeper tissues more completely, it can provide more dramatic improvement in the midface and lower face without creating a pulled appearance.

Recovery is often around 2 weeks, though residual swelling can take longer to fully settle.

Procedure Details and Recovery Arrangements

A facelift procedure, whether it involves a mini facelift, neck lift alone, mid-face lift, deep plane facelift, or a full face and neck lift, is typically performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia. Overnight recovery arrangements can also be made in Chicago, IL.

Neck Lift Surgery

A neck lift focuses specifically on improving the appearance of the jawline and neck by addressing loose skin, excess fat, and muscle laxity. While facial aging often draws the most attention, changes in the neck can appear earlier and progress independently of the face. Sagging skin, vertical muscle bands, and fullness beneath the chin can create a heavier or older appearance, even when the face itself still looks youthful.

Neck lift surgery tightens the underlying neck muscles, smooths loose skin, and refines the contour between the chin and neckline. Incisions are typically placed discreetly behind the ears and, when needed, beneath the chin to allow for muscle tightening and fat removal. The goal is a cleaner, more defined neck profile that looks natural and balanced with the rest of the face.

A neck lift may be performed on its own or combined with a facelift, depending on where aging changes are most noticeable. Patients with good cheek support and minimal facial sagging often benefit from a neck-only approach, while those with more extensive facial and neck laxity may see the best overall result from a combined procedure.

Facelift Surgery Recovery

After your facelift surgery, you return home with dressings that are usually removed the next day. Small, soft silicone drains may also be used, and are usually removed on the first or second postoperative day. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Sutures are removed within 5 to 7 days. Bruising and swelling decreases to socially acceptable levels in 10 to 14 days, and sooner for the Mini-Face Lift or Neck Lift. The result of a facelift procedure is evident in 4 to 6 weeks, or sooner, with continued improvement for several months.

Our group of nurses and aestheticians in Chicago will also formulate a skin care plan, both before and after your facelift procedure, to enhance the appearance of your skin and help maintain your results.

The specific risks and suitability of a facelift procedure will be determined during your consultation with Dr. Wiener. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk, although major complications are unusual.
