In Dr. Wiener’s Chicago practice, it is not liposuction, it is Liposelection (by Vaser). This is a relatively new and very different way to remove unwanted fat from almost any part the body that is as gentle as it is effective. How Does Liposuction using Vaser Lipo Work?
Liposelection (Vaser Lipo) uses state-of-the-art ultrasound technology to reshape your body. Since it is more tissue selective than traditional liposuction, damage to connective tissue is minimized. There is less bruising and swelling than traditional liposuction and recovery is faster. In addition, more fat can be removed with smoother results and more contraction of the overlying skin when compared to traditional liposuction.
Dr. Wiener performs this procedure in Chicago utilizing tiny incisions in inconspicuous spots. A solution is injected (tumescent approach) to facilitate the fat removal and minimize bruising. The ultrasonic treatment, Vaser Lipo, is then done. Liquefied fat is then removed. Typical treated areas range from the neck to the abdomen, flanks, back, hips, thighs, and even the knees and ankles. Local anesthesia alone is used for many of these liposuction procedures, and sedation or general anesthesia added for more extensive areas.

What Can I Expect with Recovery from Liposelection (Vaser Lipo)?
After Liposelection (Vaser Lipo) surgery, patients should expect some degree of swelling with the possibility of mild bruising. The swelling and discomfort, however, are much less than with traditional liposuction techniques. A form-fitting surgical garment is worn for several weeks to minimize swelling and optimize contour. Post-operative discomfort is treated with oral pain medications. Amica, a natural anti-inflammatory is used to control inflammation. Patients are encouraged to walk as soon as possible, and most return to work within one week (depending on the area treated).
More strenuous activities can be resumed in 4 to 6 weeks after Liposelection (Vaser Lipo). In many cases, Dr. Wiener will combine this method of liposuction with other body contouring procedures such as an abdominoplasty, thigh lift, or breast shaping procedures for more dramatic overall results.
What Areas Can Be Treated by Liposelection (Vaser Lipo)?
This method of liposuction is used extensively by Dr. Wiener as a “first stage procedure” for his Chicago patients with more significant amounts of excess fat that has been unresponsive to diet and exercise. In these larger patients, Liposelection (Vaser Lipo) is done to areas such as the abdomen, hips, flanks, and thighs in a first stage. Additional body contouring in the form of an Abdominoplasty or Thigh Lift to remove the excess skin is done in a second stage. The second stage is typically done three months after liposuction surgery.
Who Is a Candidate for Liposelection (Vaser Lipo)?
Liposelection (Vaser Lipo) will benefit patients who are interested in removing stubborn fat or excess skin from their abdominal area to achieve a firmer, more toned look in a less-invasive way than traditional liposuction. Patients in overall good health with a BMI of less than 32 may benefit the most from this procedure. Popular among weight loss patients, Liposelection (Vaser Lipo) is not meant to be a weight loss surgery, but rather, it can help you cross the finish line towards your goal weight. If you are struggling to eliminate fat from your stomach area using traditional weight loss methods, Liposelection (Vaser Lipo) can help!
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, this procedure is not recommended for you. Patients who suffer from health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and high blood pressure may also be disqualified as candidates for Liposelection (Vaser Lipo).
How Long Does the Liposelection (Vaser Lipo) Procedure Take?
While each patient’s procedure experience will vary depending on the size of the area treated and each patient’s needs, the average Liposelection (Vaser Lipo) treatment usually takes around two to three hours for all fat cells to be removed. This not only involves the removal of fat cells but also the contouring of the treated area to help the patient achieve a slimmer, more toned appearance in the abdomen.
How Can I Prepare for my Liposelection (Vaser Lipo)?
Preparing for your Liposelection (Vaser Lipo) procedure ahead of time can decrease your chances of complications during treatment and recovery. Before showing up for your Liposelection (Vaser Lipo) procedure, prepare for it by doing the following:
- Maintain a healthy diet to optimize your body’s health.
- Stick to an exercise routine to help maintain a stable weight.
- Consult your doctor about stopping prescription medications that may interfere with this procedure.
- Keep your stress levels at a minimum.
- Avoid blood-thinning medications.
- Prepare your home for easy mobility and access during your recovery period.
- Arrange transportation with a loved one to and from your appointment.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
How Long Will the Results from My Liposelection (Vaser Lipo) Last?
Because Liposelection (Vaser Lipo) targets the removal of fat cells in the abdominal area, there is no need for patients to worry about these fat cells returning. These fat cells have been permanently removed, and patients can expect to enjoy the results of their Vaser Lipo forever. However, a major factor in the appearance of your Vaser Lipo results depends on your ability to maintain a stable weight. Gaining a significant amount of weight may alter the appearance of your results and cause new fat cells to appear in the abdominal area. To avoid this, stick to a healthy diet and consistent exercise routine, and enjoy the results of your Vaser Lipo treatment for a lifetime.
