What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion, also referred to as mechanical exfoliation or micro resurfacing, is a method for facial rejuvenation that uses a mechanical medium for exfoliation along with adjustable suction to sweep away the outermost layer of dead skin cells from the epidermis.
It is a non-invasive procedure, which is performed by one of our trained Medical Aestheticians.
Am I a candidate for microdermabrasion?
All of us have a certain degree of dead skin cells, oil, and other issues with the outer layer of our skin. And each of us would benefit from the exfoliation provided by microdermabrasion. Unlike more aggressive, ablative treatments, microdermabrasion can be used on all skin tones and types. It doesn’t cause hyperpigmentation.
There isn’t any downtime. Just about everyone could use microdermabrasion at Dr. Wiener’s practice to brighten their complexion and improve their skin quality. Specific candidates include individuals struggling with sun damage, acne, blotchy skin, fine scars, slight wrinkles, keratosis, large pores, non-inflamed whiteheads caused by keratin-clogged pores, or unfavorable skin texture.
Should anyone not have microdermabrasion?
The only people who shouldn’t have microdermabrasion are those whose acne, eczema, or psoriasis are active. You need to wait until the breakout or flareup passes and your skin calms. At that point, you could have this treatment.
How Does Microdermabrasion Work?
The exfoliation and suctioning disrupts the skin’s surface causing cell division. As the skin cells divide, fibroblast activity is stimulated leading to collagen production, which leads to thicker, firmer skin.
Human skin sloughs off at a slower rate with age, so the exfoliation of several layers of the stratum corneum (surface skin layers) leaves skin fresh and radiant.
Microdermabrasion can be done to decrease the appearance of superficial hyperpigmentation, photo-damage, diminish fine lines, wrinkles, and shallow acne scars, which helps to even out the texture. Removing the dead skin will aid in the penetration of skin care products by up to 50% and makeup will go on much more smoothly.
“Dr. Weiner and his staff are beyond amazing. His bedside manner and the way he makes you feel so at ease is impeccable. I have never met a doctor where his talent and kindness were both even.” –S.R.
How is microdermabrasion performed?
Before we begin the procedure, we clean your skin with a special cleansing gel. Our aesthetician slowly moves the wand across your entire face, it sprays microscopic crystals onto your skin and instantly vacuums away the crystals and the abraded dead skin cells, dirt, and whatever else was built up on your skin.
The degree of exfoliation is determined by the amount of suction employed and the number of passes made over the skin surface. The treatment takes from 20-30 minutes for the face. If you want to treat other areas such as the neck, your session may last up to an hour. Because microdermabrasion only targets the superficial layer of the skin, topical numbing isn’t necessary.
How many treatments are needed?
These are easy treatments to take, and there isn’t a limit to how many you can have. Dr. Wiener has patients who come in every month or two for microdermabrasion. This keeps their skin exfoliated and looking great. For new patients, we usually recommend between six and 10 treatments, spaced two weeks apart.
This really makes a great starting point for initial skin improvement. Once patients have a couple microdermabrasion treatments, they feel they maintain the quality they like with a session every two or three months.
When will I see results?
You will see results immediately. As mentioned above, your skin will be a little red for a few hours after your session. Your skin will look more vibrant and healthier immediately. It’s amazing how removing the outer layer of dead skin cells improves your skin’s tone. Overall results tend to build with more treatments, as your collagen production accelerates.
How long will my results from microdermabrasion last?
Microdermabrasion at The Art of Plastic Surgery provides results that last for about one month. That is the cycle for your skin to fully regenerate.
When can I return to normal activity?
There isn’t any recovery or downtime. Your skin may look as if you have a mild sunburn for a few hours after your treatment, but this passes quickly.
Does microdermabrasion hurt?
Microdermabrasion only deals with the outermost layer of the epidermis, so there isn’t any pain involved. As the pen sprays the microcrystals onto your skin, patients equate the feeling to that of a mild scratching. Others say it is a feeling like being at the beach on a windy day. Mostly you feel the suction of the vacuum as it glides over your skin.
“I had been researching doctors and getting this procedure done for years. I finally came upon Dr. Wiener’s practice and I must say I was reassured immediately that I was making the right decision. The staff is friendly and Dr. Wiener will literally spend and hour and a half answering your questions on your consultation like he did with me.” – K.T.
