Silicone breast implants
Silicone implants are the most popular because the silicone gel offers a feel that’s most like natural breast tissue. Current silicone implants are made using a cohesive gel, which is firmer than the liquid gel used in implants prior to 1992. If the implant ruptures, however, you may not know as the implant doesn’t collapse and the gel remains in the shell or leaks into the breast implant pocket. You’ll have to see your surgeon regularly to make sure the implant is still intact. Silicone implants are FDA-approved for women age 22 or older.
Highly cohesive gel implants
Highly cohesive silicone gel implants, also known as “gummy bear” implants, were approved by the FDA in 2012. These are made of a slightly firmer type of gel. The form-stable gel minimizes the potential issues of rippling and folds, which naturally occurs in silicone gel implants and saline implants. They are ideal for use in patients who are very thin or are having breast reconstruction surgery after mastectomy.
Saline implants
Saline implants are a good option for patient with fairly thick tissues and skin. These implants consist of a silicone outer shell that’s filled once it’s inserted into the breast implant pocket. This requires a smaller incision than with gel implants and gives Dr. Wiener the flexibility with size. They are FDA-approved for augmentation in women age 18 and older. If the implant ruptures or leaks, you will know it as it collapses. The saline water is naturally absorbed and expelled by the body.
